Mummifying Tomatoes in P3/P4

23rd Oct 2023

Pupils in P3/P4 have been learning all about the process of Ancient Egyptian mummification. Today, pupils had a go at mummifying their very own tomatoes, which was a very interesting experience to say the least. Firstly, pupils made a small incision in their tomatoes and removed all the organs (seeds). Secondly, the children washed their tomatoes using antibacterial hand wash to remove any germs. Finally, the pupils coated their tomatoes with salt and bicarbonate soda (natron) to ensure their mummies are preserved. We look forward to analysing the effectiveness of the mummification process after Halloween. Our next activity will be to create a sarcophagus to ensure our tomatoes are stored safely. Brilliant work, P3/P4.
