Rationing in WW2

13th May 2024

Pupils in P3/P4 have been very busy exploring why rationing was introduced during WW2 and how it impacted society. The children were each given their own ration book and had to decide what they were going to spend their rations on and in what shop, by accurately calculating the number of points they needed for each item. This proved to be a very valuable experience for the children when deciding on needs and wants. Additionally, the children also explored the different items of food that were available for children’s birthday parties during WW2 and compared them to birthday parties we have today. A very common birthday treat was a fruit cake, so we decided to have a go at making our own fruit cake using bread, apples, raisins, prunes and a small amount of strawberry jam - the taste was not to everyone’s liking!
